We are pleased to announce the Ruth Brown Memorial Scholarship
January 2019:
Bartlesville Women’s Network has established the Ruth Brown Memorial Scholarship for a Masters in Library Science in coordination with the School of Library and Information Studies at the University of Oklahoma.
The scholarship will provide a $1000 scholarship each year for the next 10 years, funded by donations to the Ruth Brown Memorial Celebration sponsored by Women’s Network.
Miss Ruth Brown was a Bartlesville public librarian dismissed in 1950 because of her civil rights activities in the 1940s promoting the equality of African-Americans.
A person becomes an accredited librarian only by completing a Masters in Library Science. Whether one becomes a public librarian, a children’s librarian or a science librarian at a veterinary school a Masters in Library Science is the key.
Who is eligible for the WN sponsored Ruth Brown Memorial Scholarship?
• Candidate is to be a resident of Nowata, Osage or Washington County.
• Minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.5 on a 4 point scale
• Candidate may attend either OU campus or online (OU campus, OU Tulsa campus or online)
• Requires a 500-word statement of why they wish to be a librarian
• Enrolled for a minimum of six hours per semester
