OMEN’S NETWORK TALLGRASS PRAIRIE TOUR
SATURDAY, APRIL 13
Schedule:
8:00—8:15 – meet at parking lot of United Grocers if you want to carpool
9:00 – breakfast at “The Mercantile” in Pawhuska
10:00 – start drive to the Visitor Center at the Tallgrass Prairie, saving time for stops along the way to view bison
10:45 – 11:00 – gather at the Visitor Center for docent tour
11:00 – meet at kiosk below Visitor Center, start short ( ¼ mile) hike along nature trail, just below Visitor Center. This tour will be led by Leila Shultz
12:00 – There are several options here: you can picnic at tables below the Tallgrass Visitor Center, take a longer hike, or return to town for lunch (several good choices)
1:00-1:30 Return to Bartlesville at your leisure OR stay for a special guided tour of the home of John Joseph Mathews, Oklahoma’s own “Thoreau of the Prairie.” He is author of many books dealing with traditions of the Osage nation, including “Talking to the Moon.” Drs. Karen Neurohr and K. Black will be driving in from Stillwater, hoping to meet us at picnic grounds, then at the cabin. At the gate to the cabin, we will meet Patricia Webster, a distant cousin of Mathews and a docent. The road to the cabin is on the way back to Pawhuska just south of the entrance to the Tallgrass Prairie, about where asphalt ends. Patricia will start the tour after we gather at the gate and carpool in. You can plan to leave the cabin sometime before 3:00.
What to bring:
Please be sure to wear comfortable hiking shoes and bring water and a hat for our short hike. After you leave Pawhuska, you will be on a dirt road. Please plan for a leisurely drive and a bit of dust. You won’t be able to get out of the car except for one or two turnouts. The hike will be past the last bison guard near the Visitor Center. The Visitor Center has rest rooms but no food or drink.
Because there are several options around lunch time, be sure to think about what car you ride in and let the driver know if you have a schedule change during the day. Please let Leila know if you are planning to attend. You can text, email, or leave voicemail.
Please RSVP by Monday April 8th (day of Eclipse) to Leila Shultz
